Utility Biome
Utility Biome

Utility Biome is a library mod for Hytale. It is the shared base for mods that change world generation, such as Better Biomes. For players and server admins it adds commands to find and inspect biomes, caves and generated features. For mod authors it offers an API to place their own features in newly generated chunks, small structures from text blueprints, and build tools that generate and check world-generation files.

Utility Biome adds no biomes, blocks or items of its own. On its own it does not change how your world looks. You only need it when another mod requires it.

Do I need it?

  • Yes, if you play or host Better Biomes or any other mod that lists Utility Biome as a dependency. The server will not start that mod without it.
  • No, otherwise. Installed alone it is harmless, but apart from the /ub commands it adds nothing.

What it does

  • Commands for finding and checking biomes: which biome you are standing in, which biomes the world generator has loaded, how common each biome is around a point, and a teleport to the next patch of a biome. See Commands.
  • Commands for caves and features: list the cave types and ores of a zone, teleport into the nearest cave of a type, and find spots where a mod placed one of its chunk features.
  • Chunk features for other mods: mods like Better Biomes use Utility Biome to add things the vanilla generator cannot make on its own. Utility Biome runs that code on every newly generated chunk, the same way for the same world seed.
  • Small structures: mods describe a building as a text blueprint, and Utility Biome looks for a flat spot on natural ground, rotates it and adds a foundation.

The waterfalls, overhangs or floating islands you may see with a world-generation mod come from that mod. Utility Biome provides the framework they run on.
