BlockyRenderer:Renderer Only
Instead of the text with the preview beside it, a file can open on its own in the renderer. It then has one tab and no code tab.
Blocky Preview (3D)
The Blocky Preview (3D) is an editor for .blockymodel and .blockyanim files that only shows the renderer. It has the same toolbar as the Preview: texture, model and animation lists, grid, Reset View and the timeline. You cannot change the model in its 3D view.
Open it once with:
- Open in Renderer Only when you right-click a file in the Explorer or a model in the model browser,
- the Open in Renderer Only button in the title bar of the text editor,
- Open With… and then Blocky Preview (3D).
Always open files in the renderer
The setting blockyRenderer.openFilesIn decides what .blockymodel and .blockyanim files open in. You can also change it with Open Blocky Files In… in the … menu of the Models view.

The choice applies the next time a file is opened. Tabs that are already open stay as they are.
How it works
The setting writes matching entries for *.blockymodel and *.blockyanim into workbench.editorAssociations. It uses the same level as the setting itself: if blockyRenderer.openFilesIn is set in the workspace, the workspace associations are changed, otherwise the user associations. Other entries in workbench.editorAssociations stay untouched. Going back to text removes only the entries of this extension.
Open Blocky Files In… also writes to the workspace if the setting is already set there, otherwise to the user settings.
Working without the text
- Show Source in the title bar opens the JSON text beside the renderer, or in the editor group where it is already open.
- Clicks in the 3D view only select the node in the text if the text is already visible. No text editor opens by itself.
- In the Blocky Preview of a model, the pencil icon switches to the Blocky Editor in the same tab.
- The Nodes view shows the node tree of the model in the active Blocky Preview tab. Its commands (add, rename, duplicate, show or hide, delete) still change the file, even though the Blocky Preview itself is view only. See Blocky Renderer Tab.
