Stat Lens adds one view to the Explorer, called Stat Lens. It is a tree with one row per figure. Some rows can be expanded. Expanded and collapsed sections stay as they are when the view is refreshed.

The Stat Lens view with the Languages section expanded

Rows

The rows appear in this order. A row is left out when there is no value for it.

Row Shows
Languages Total lines of code and the number of languages, for example 162,687 lines · 9 languages. Expand it to see each language.
Files Number of files and folders that were scanned.
Size Total size of all scanned files, in B, KB, MB, GB or TB (steps of 1024).
Largest File The file with the most lines of code, with its path and line count. Click it to open the file.
Project Age Date of the first commit, how long ago that was, and the source.
Last Change Date of the last commit, how long ago that was, and the source.
Git Number of commits. Expand it for more. See Git.
Dependencies Total number of dependencies in all manifest files. Expand it to see each file. See Dependencies.
Warnings Only shown when the scan had problems. Expand it to see them. See Warnings.
Last Scan Date and time of the scan the view is showing.

Languages

Each language has its own row under Languages, sorted by lines of code, the largest first. A row shows:

  • a colored dot in the language color used by GitHub Linguist. Languages without such a color get one from a fixed palette, always the same for the same language.
  • a text bar of ten blocks, for example ████░░░░░░, as a quick visual of the share
  • the share of all lines of code in percent, with one decimal
  • the lines of code and the number of files in that language

The list includes programming languages and also markup, data and prose formats, for example HTML, JSON, YAML or Markdown. How lines are counted is explained on Scanning.

Project Age and Last Change

Both rows prefer Git:

Row With Git Without Git
Project Age date of the first commit (source: first commit) oldest creation time of a scanned file (source: oldest file)
Last Change date of the last commit (source: last commit) newest modification time of a scanned file (source: most recent file change)

The relative age is rounded down: today, then days, then months (30 days each), then years (365 days each).

Git

Expand Git to see:

Row Shows
Commits Number of commits reachable from the current HEAD, so the history of the branch you have checked out.
Contributors Number of different author e-mail addresses in that history. Upper and lower case are ignored.
First Commit Date of the oldest commit. If the history has more than one root commit, the oldest one counts.
Last Commit Date of the newest commit on HEAD.

If the folder is not a Git repository, the Git row says not a Git repository and cannot be expanded. Other notes that can appear:

  • git is not installed or not in PATH
  • no commits yet, for a repository without commits
  • git log failed: ..., if Git returned an error

Only the first folder of the workspace is used, so Git data comes from the repository that contains that folder.

Warnings

Warnings lists problems that did not stop the scan:

  • Folder not readable: ..., for a folder the extension could not open. Its contents are skipped.
  • Language detection failed: .... In this case no lines of code are counted, but files, size, dates and dependencies are still shown.

If the whole scan fails, a row with Scan failed: ... and a warning icon appears at the top. An older result stays visible below it.

Other states
