New Ranch gives the world a calendar, a temperature and local weather, and gives the player hunger and thirst. Most of this can be switched off in the configuration.

Seasons

A day is counted at every dawn, and every 7 days the season changes: Spring → Summer → Autumn → Winter, so a year has 28 days. A new world starts on spring, day 1. Each change is announced in chat; the Farm Journal and the Calendar show the date.

Season Effect on the farm Base temperature
Spring Crops grow 25% faster 14 °C
Summer +1 to every crop harvest; fruit trees bear 28 °C
Autumn +2 fruit per tree shake, +1 per berry bush harvest; Harvest Festival on days 5–7 11 °C
Winter Crops grow 50% slower; blizzards in the snow biome; Wolf Nights −3 °C
  • Every crop has growing seasons. Out of season it does not grow at all. The seed tooltip shows "Grows in …" in green or red.
  • Ways around the season: an Amberglass roof (greenhouse), the Hallow in Hardmode (eternal spring, can be switched off) and the area near hot springs.
  • With the world setting Seasons reshape the world, oceans freeze in winter and surface ice melts in summer.

Temperature

You are comfortable between 2 °C and 34 °C. Each piece of warm or shading gear moves the limit by 14 °C.

  • Night: −6 °C (−9 °C in winter).
  • Biomes: snow −20 °C, desert +16 °C by day and −8 °C at night, underground desert +14 °C, jungle +7 °C, beach −3 °C, sky −14 °C, Underworld +60 °C and more with depth.
  • Underground the temperature moves towards 12 °C and stops following the seasons at the rock layer. Ice caves and climate pockets have their own values.
  • Weather: blizzard down to about −29 °C, sandstorm +9 °C (+16 °C when heavy), rain −5 °C, drought +7 °C.
  • Rooms: a heated room pulls towards 20 °C, a cooled room towards 12 °C.
  • Shivering: 12% slower and hunger drains twice as fast. Sweltering: thirst drains twice as fast.
  • Wet: wetness from 0 to 100 (damp from 40, soaked from 75). Soaked, you feel the cold up to 12 °C sooner. You get wet fast and dry slowly; a heated room dries you faster.

Weather

  • Drought: starts after 4 days without rain and ends with the next rain. Crops grow 50% slower (Dried Date grows faster). The Weather Watcher moves in after the first drought.
  • Blizzard: snow biome in winter only. Gusts last 2–5 minutes with 8–20 minute lulls and are a flurry, a storm or a whiteout. A whiteout can set crops back a stage unless they are under Amberglass.
  • Jungle rain: local showers of 3–6 minutes; it keeps raining in the jungle during a drought.
  • Sandstorms: extra sandstorms in summer and during droughts; one in four is heavy (hotter, water evaporates faster).
  • Thunderstorms can strike livestock under open sky (see Livestock).

Hunger and thirst

With Hunger and thirst on (default), two bars under your buffs show food and water from 0 to 100.

  • A full stomach lasts about 47 real minutes, full water about 24. Cold doubles food drain, heat doubles water drain. Nothing drains during boss fights, and you respawn with at least 25 of each.
  • At 30 or less you get Hungry or Parched as a warning.
  • At 0 food you take growing starvation damage (4 up to 25, every 10 down to every 2 seconds). At 0 water you are 15% slower, rising to 40% over 5 minutes.
  • Food restores 12 to 55 food depending on its Well Fed tier. Bottled Water gives 45 water, other drinks 20, soups 15. A Watering Can can be drunk from (25 water). The Cornucopia slows drain and gives +50%.

Turning hunger off also turns off temperature and wetness.

Spoiling food

With Food spoils on (needs hunger), food goes off after a number of in-game days: 4 for top-tier food, 6 for mid-tier, 8 for Well Fed food, 5 for food without a buff. The tooltip shows Fresh, Turning and Spoiled. Spoiled food cannot be eaten and turns into Manure (half the stack).

  • Smoked Ration, Salted Ration and Mouldplum never spoil.
  • The Cold Box stops spoiling for food inside it.
  • A chest is a larder and does not age when it stands in a cold or dry cave pocket, an icehouse or an ice cave, holds 8 or more Frost Fern, or has 30 or more ebonwood or shadewood blocks or walls within 5 tiles.
  • Near the Corruption, food in your inventory and in nearby chests ages faster (The rot reaches out setting).
