NewRanch:Livestock

New Ranch livestock are animals you keep rather than kill. They are friendly, drop nothing when killed, and only give produce while they live on your farm. Animals never die from neglect; they simply produce less.

Animals

Livestock: Hen, Chick, Woolly Ewe, Ancient Ewe, Dairy Cow, Roost Crow, Barn Cat, Guard Goose, Camel, Ash Goat and Tamed Unicorn. The Herding Dog and the bees help the farm but do not count as livestock.

Animal Where to find it Other sources Produce
Hen Surface, daytime Veterinarian; hatched as a Chick that grows up in 3 minutes; redeemed Flesh Hen Farm Egg 2–3
Woolly Ewe Surface, any time Veterinarian; breeding; redeemed Flesh Ewe; thawed from ice Wool Tuft 2–3
Dairy Cow Surface, any time Breeding; redeemed Flesh Cow Milk 1–2
Roost Crow Surface, daytime, after The Old Crow is defeated Breeding Old Crow's Feather 1–2 (turnip feed only)
Barn Cat Surface, night Veterinarian Keeps pests down (see below)
Guard Goose Surface (also on Rich Soil), daytime – Warns of enemies
Herding Dog Surface, daytime – Keeps the herd together
Camel Surface desert – Nothing at the moment
Ash Goat Underworld ash plains Tame it first: hold a Cinderseed Ear within 16 tiles; after it has eaten 5 it can be caught Milk or wool: Ashmilk or Ember Wool when no cow or ewe is near
Tamed Unicorn – Hold Prismberry near a Unicorn: after 3 berries it stops attacking, after 5 it is tamed (can be turned off in the config) Turns all milk of its trough into Prism Milk
Ancient Ewe – Frozen in ice blocks in glaciers and ice caves; thaw the block with heat (lava, a forge) for a 1 in 6 chance (otherwise a Woolly Ewe) +3 wool at its trough
Honeybee, Bumblebee Orchard Grove and Bloom Jungle, daytime The Beekeeper sells Honeybees Honeycomb and Beeswax from the Bee Skep (placed with the Honeybee item)
  • Catching: use a bug net. Placing the caught animal item sets down its pen tile: Hen Pen, Ewe Pen, Cow Pen, Crow Roost, Cat Basket, Dog House, Camel Pen, Goat Pen, Unicorn Pen or Bee Skep.
  • Redeemed animals: Flesh Hens, Flesh Ewes and Flesh Cows roam the surface Crimson. Instead of dying they collapse at low health for 40 seconds. Use a Fever Serum on a collapsed one and it becomes a healthy Hen, Woolly Ewe or Dairy Cow that follows you for 6 minutes. A Corrupted Unicorn treated the same way becomes a normal Unicorn.
  • The Shepherd moves in once 2 livestock live within 60 tiles of a player. He sells Farm Shears, the Milk Pail, the Pasture Flute, Wild Grain and the Feed Trough.

The Feed Trough

The Feed Trough (6 planks and 4 Wood at a Work Bench, 3×2) is the farm's main production building.

  • Right-click to fill it with 1 Wild Grain, or with 1 Turnip if you are holding one.
  • It counts free animals within 30 tiles and pens within 10 tiles. A pen counts as its animal even if no animal stands nearby.
  • About once a minute it checks for production: grain produces on 1 check in 3, turnip on every check. The Steady Stock buff (from Stockman's Brew or Harrowbloom Brew) makes grain produce on every check too.
  • If several kinds of animal qualify, one product is picked at random. Every harvest also gives 1–2 Manure.
  • Yield bonuses: +1 with the Husbandry research branch, +1 if a prize-ribboned animal (see Livestock Show) is within 30 tiles.
  • Breeding: on a producing check there is a 1 in 6 chance of a birth if 2 healthy animals of the same kind are within 30 tiles, fewer than 6 of that kind are in range and the climate suits them. Only Hens (giving a Chick), Woolly Ewes, Dairy Cows and Roost Crows breed.

Hand tools

  • Farm Shears (4 Barn Bar, 2 Wood, Anvil): 1–2 Wool Tuft from a Woolly Ewe.
  • Milk Pail (2 Barn Bar, 6 Wood, Anvil): 1 Milk from a Dairy Cow.
  • Each animal needs 60 seconds before it can be used again. This is longer during a full moon (×1.6), in the shadow of the Sky Crown (×1.8) and when the animal has blood fever (×3.2). In the wrong climate you only get the minimum amount.
  • Pasture Flute (Husbandry): livestock within 45 tiles walk towards you for 20 seconds.

Climate and shelter

Each animal has a comfort range. Out of its range it produces on only 1 in 4 of its checks and never breeds. The trough checks the climate where the trough stands.

Animal Too cold below Too hot above Too wet above
Hen, Chick 4 °C 32 °C 55
Dairy Cow 0 °C 30 °C 70
Woolly Ewe −14 °C 24 °C 40
Ancient Ewe −30 °C 16 °C 40
Roost Crow −8 °C 36 °C 60
Guard Goose −6 °C 28 °C never
Camel 10 °C 46 °C 45
Ash Goat 38 °C 90 °C never
Tamed Unicorn 8 °C 26 °C 35
Barn Cat 2 °C 34 °C 30
  • Wool Blanket: animals within 10 tiles tolerate 14 °C more cold.
  • Shade Awning: animals within 10 tiles tolerate 14 °C more heat and stay dry.
  • In an enclosed room there is no wetness, and the room temperature applies, so a heated stall works in winter.

See Seasons and Climate for temperatures.

Helper animals and farm buildings

  • Dog House (Herding Dog): about once a minute it turns back livestock that are 22–40 tiles away from it.
  • Cat Basket (Barn Cat): nearby players get Cat on the Prowl, which halves Field Crow and Barn Rat spawns. The cat hunts field mice and cave rats.
  • Guard Goose: honks when an enemy comes within 30 tiles.
  • Bee Skep (Honeybee): crops within 12 tiles yield +1. It fills only while crops or bushes are near; a full skep gives 1–3 Honeycomb (+1 in the Bloom Jungle) and sometimes Beeswax.
  • Pasture Fence and Pasture Gate: two stacked fence pieces keep animals in, but you can jump over them; animals cannot open the gate.
  • Grain Silo (Farm Works): holds up to 3 loads of 2 Wild Grain and refills empty troughs within 20 tiles.
  • Windmill (Farm Works): grinds 3 Wild Grain into 2–3 Flour when there is wind; on sky islands it always grinds.
  • Butter Churn: 3 milk of the same kind, right-click 3 times for 2 Butter.
  • Worm Bin: 3 Manure gives 4–8 Earthworms.
  • Pest Trap: baited with Wild Grain (12 tiles) or Cheese (25 tiles), it kills a pest now and then.
  • Gather Crates feed nearby compost heaps and silos automatically.

Predators and hazards

  • Fox (night, near livestock): carries off a Hen or Chick; kill it to get the bird back. A Herding Dog, Barn Cat or Tamed Wolf within 14 tiles, or a Guard Goose within 12 tiles, keeps it away.
  • Hawk (clear days): dives at hens, chicks and you. A solid roof stops the dive.
  • Winter Wolf (winter nights and blizzards): scatters the herd. A Herding Dog or Tamed Wolf keeps it at a distance.
  • Thunderstorms: lightning can turn an animal under open sky into a Storm Wraith. Any solid roof within 40 tiles above keeps it safe.
  • Pests such as Field Crows, Barn Rats, Grubs, Locusts and Rot Fruit come for the fields. Scarecrows, the Cat Basket and Pest Traps keep them down; their rate is set in the configuration.

Blood fever

Animals within about 60 tiles of Crimson ground can catch blood fever (1 in 6 every 45 seconds); a sick animal can infect a neighbour within 24 tiles. Nothing dies, but a trough produces nothing for a species if all of its animals in range are sick, and hand tools take 3.2× longer. The Veterinarian tells you how many sick animals are near her.

  • Fever Serum: use within 5 tiles of a sick animal to cure it. Sold by the Veterinarian.
  • Nightpulse Brew (Veterinary Work): gives Herd Ward for 8 minutes, which cures one sick animal within 40 tiles every 12 seconds.
  • Cutting the blood vein under the pasture stops new infections.

Blood fever can be turned off in the configuration.
