The main job of a backpack is to catch items before they fill your inventory. This page explains exactly when that happens and when it doesn't.

What goes in

Every time items are added to your inventory from outside, the mod checks the backpacks you carry. That covers:

  • picking up items from the ground, for example after mining a block or felling a tree,
  • items you craft,
  • rewards and items given to you.

If the item fits one of your backpacks, it moves there right after it arrived.

What stays out

  • Items you move yourself. Taking something out of a chest, out of a storage terminal or out of a backpack is a move, not a pickup. Those items stay in your inventory. Otherwise everything you take out on purpose would jump straight back in.
  • Stacks you already had. Only the amount that just arrived moves. If you hold 60 stone in your hotbar and pick up one more, the one goes into the Digger's Backpack and the 60 stay.
  • Items that fit no backpack. They stay in your inventory as usual.

Where backpacks count

A backpack catches items when it is in your hotbar, your inventory, your backpack slots or your utility slot. A backpack in a chest or on the ground does nothing.

Which backpack gets it

The mod goes through your backpacks in this order and fills the first one with room:

  1. hotbar, from left to right,
  2. inventory,
  3. backpack slots,
  4. utility slot.

If the first backpack fills up, the rest goes on to the next matching backpack. Whatever still doesn't fit stays in your inventory, so nothing is lost when all your backpacks are full.

Some items fit more than one kind. A half log, for example, fits both the Forester's and the Builder's Backpack. It goes into whichever of the two comes first in the order above. To steer such items, place the backpack you prefer further left in your hotbar.

Opening and filling by hand

Hold a backpack and right-click to open it. While it is open, pickups keep going into it, and you see them arrive. You can drag matching items in by hand, and you can take anything out. The backpack refuses items that don't belong.

Saving

The contents are stored in the backpack item itself, the same way the vanilla Seed Bag works. A backpack keeps everything when you drop it, store it in a chest, hand it to someone or log out, and after a server restart.
