This page walks you through your first backpack. It takes a few minutes and some leather.

1. Pick a backpack

Think about what clogs your inventory the most. On a mining trip that is stone and dirt, so a Digger's Backpack helps most. In the forest it is logs and saplings, so take a Forester's Backpack. All six are listed on Backpacks.

2. Craft it

Go to a Workbench and open the Survival category. A Small backpack needs:

  • 4 Light Leather
  • 4 Plant Fiber
  • 2 of its trade ingredient, for example 2 soil blocks for the Digger's Backpack

Every recipe is on Crafting.

3. Carry it

Put the backpack into your hotbar or your inventory. It does not need to be in your hand to work, and it does not take up an armor or tool slot.

4. Pick things up

Mine, chop and loot as usual. Whenever you pick up an item that fits, it moves into the backpack on its own. Items that don't fit stay in your inventory as before.

Only the amount you just picked up moves. If you keep 60 stone in your hotbar for building and pick up one more, the one goes into the Digger's Backpack and your 60 stay where they are. Items you take out of a chest by hand also stay in your inventory. The details are on Auto-Pickup.

5. Open it

Hold the backpack in your hand and right-click. A window with the backpack's slots opens next to your inventory. You can take anything out, and you can put matching items in by hand. Items that don't belong are refused.

6. Grow

A Small backpack has 9 slots. Once that is not enough, craft a Medium (18 slots) or a Big (27 slots) backpack. There is no upgrade recipe: craft the bigger one fresh and move your items over. You can carry as many backpacks as you like, of the same or different kinds.
