NewRanch:Dried Fields

The Dried Fields are a deep underground biome: farmland that the Dungeon has drained dry. There is one per world. It counts as active when about 120 field soil tiles (in any of its four states) are near you.
Location
The Dried Fields always lie directly beneath the Dungeon: a belt about 500 tiles wide that begins 200 tiles below the rock layer and reaches down to about 45 tiles above the Underworld. Nothing is built over the caves; stone, dirt and clay are converted into Parched Soil and field wall, while ore, dungeon brick, chests and water are left alone.
| Zone | Share of the height | What it holds |
|---|---|---|
| The Dry Fields (upper) | 45% | Dried lake basins, barns, mill towers, fence lines and field paths |
| The Withered Roots (middle) | 35% | Farmhouses, granaries, irrigation stations, root works and the Old Wells |
| The Dry Reservoir (deep) | 20% | Only 55% of the ground is converted; the reservoir pump chamber and sluices |
Soil states
Water heals the ground step by step:
Parched → Moist → Green → Fertile
A tile needs water within one tile to advance. A Watering Can, a Sprinkler, a spade and a repaired Old Well each push a tile one stage at once.
| State | Tile | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Parched | Parched Soil | The starting state |
| Moist | Moist Soil | Golden Wheat, Golden Corn and Fieldberry grow here; drops Dirt when mined |
| Green | Green Soil | Same plants as Moist; drops Dirt when mined |
| Fertile | Fertile Soil | The best farmland in the mod: crops grow twice as fast and yield +2 |
The Skeletron gate
The Dungeon's pull decides how far the ground can heal:
- Before Skeletron is defeated, watered soil can only become Moist, and higher stages fall back on their own.
- After Skeletron, the chain runs all the way to Fertile and holds.
Water sources
- Old Wells: four to six in the middle zone. One Irrigation Part repairs a well; see Old Well.
- Reservoir pump: repairing it costs 5 Irrigation Parts and 15 Iron Bars. When its cistern is full, right-click to open every irrigation sluice; with all sluices open the whole Dried Fields count as watered (the Skeletron gate still applies).
- Dried lake basins in the upper zone hold sunken walls, ore and the cargo of a sunken boat, which may contain an Irrigation Part.
- Field ruins hold dead grain, flour and sometimes Ancient Grain Seeds; irrigation stations and root chambers hold Irrigation Parts.
Spawns
- Orchard Ent, Root Ent, Rootling, Hollow Ent and the rare Withered Farmer
- Dustcrawler, mostly on diggable ground
- Drought Wisp at night
- Ancient Ent, very rarely, where at least 400 field soil tiles are near
Withered plants on Parched Soil come back to life as Golden Wheat or Golden Corn when the soil turns moist.
