A Block Factory world is a wide, flat steppe built by the mod's own world generator. One rule runs through all of it: the farther you go from the spawn, the richer and the more dangerous it gets. Where things lie depends on the world seed; the distances on this page are the same in every world.

A small factory on the steppe

The steppe

The ground is flat, grassy and only three blocks thick, so there is nothing to dig into. The grass color shifts softly across the land. Trees stand mostly in groves, with an occasional lone tree between them; about one tree in eight is dead and bare. Rocks and large rocks lie scattered everywhere. Trees and rocks never stand on ore fields or in water.

You cannot break or place world blocks. Trees and rocks can be harvested by hand; see Gathering and Crafting.

Around the spawn

What Distance from the spawn (about)
Bunker At the spawn, underground
Portal of the Ancient (ruin) 20 blocks
Coal and Stone Fields 58 blocks
Iron and Copper Ore Fields 64 blocks
Two groves 78 blocks
Small lake 88 blocks
Sand and Clay Fields 100 blocks
Great Portal 210 blocks

The directions differ from world to world. These start fields always exist, whatever the world settings say. Within 32 blocks of the spawn there is no ore field and no tree, and within about 48 blocks no water. Up to 160 blocks out you find only the start fields; random fields begin beyond that. See Getting Started for what to do first.

Ore fields

Icon Field Gives Where
Iron Ore Field Iron Ore Start area and everywhere
Copper Ore Field Copper Ore Start area and everywhere
Coal Field Coal Start area and everywhere
Stone Field Stone Start area and everywhere
Sand Field Sand Start area and everywhere
Clay Field Clay Start area and everywhere
Gold Ore Field Gold Ore From 320 blocks out
Oil Wells Crude Oil (with an Oil Pumpjack) From 480 blocks out
Uranium Ore Field Uranium Ore From 800 blocks out
  • Fields are infinite. Drills never empty them.
  • Size grows with distance. Start fields have a radius of 10 to 16 blocks. Out in the steppe the radius grows with the distance, up to 48 blocks.
  • Richness grows with distance. Richness is how fast a drill mines there. A start field has richness 1; out in the steppe it is 1 plus the distance divided by 200, so a field 200 blocks out is about twice as rich and one 600 blocks out about four times.
  • The center of a field is richer than its edge: richness drops to half at the rim.
  • Fields have frayed edges and never lie in water or mountains.
  • Iron, Copper and Coal are the most common random fields; Gold, Oil and Uranium are rarer and only appear far out.

Server operators can change how often fields appear and how big and rich they are, in total or per resource; see World Settings. Mining details: Mining.

Oil and uranium

An oil field is not a surface but a group of 5 to 9 single Oil Wells, spaced so that an Oil Pumpjack (3 × 3) fits on each one with a path between them. Oil Wells give nothing by hand. See Oil Processing.

Uranium Ore Fields lie 800 blocks or more from the spawn, in the dangerous outer steppe. See Nuclear Power.

Water

Water pumps at a lake feeding a boiler
  • A small lake lies about 88 blocks from the spawn. Your first steam engine needs a Water Pump there.
  • Beyond about 170 blocks lakes and winding rivers appear. Rivers widen where they flow into a lake.
  • Very far out, from about 700 blocks, rare oceans appear.
  • Water is at most 2 blocks deep. You can swim through it or fill it with Landfill; see Floors and Landfill.
  • The area around the Great Portal stays dry.

Mountain walls

From 240 blocks out, low mountain walls (3 to 7 blocks high) wind across the steppe. They have passes, so they never close off an area completely. You cannot break them by hand; TNT from the Explosives research blasts them, leaving grass behind. See Weapons and Armor.

Ruins and War Golems

From 300 blocks out, ruins of the old world stand in the steppe: pillar halls, crumbling walled squares and gate arches. Each one is guarded by a War Golem sleeping in a pile of rubble. It attacks whatever comes near its ruin, but it does not chase you far and never raids your factory on its own. From 800 blocks out the guardians are Elder War Golems, which are stronger. A defeated golem leaves a Research Capsule. See Enemies.

Animal herds

Herds of Steppe Grazers and Dune Hoppers roam a ring between about 48 and 240 blocks around the spawn. They are harmless. Animal Traps catch them for meat, hides, tallow and bones. See Hunting and Farming.

Enemy nests

Dust Burrows are the nests of the steppe creatures. By default no nest lies within 500 blocks of the spawn; farther out they become more common, and Large Dust Burrows appear. Nests never sit on ore fields, water, mountains or ruins, but the rich outer fields lie in nest country. Noise from your machines wakes them. See Enemies and Defense.

The Great Portal

The Great Portal from afar

The dark ring of the Great Portal stands about 210 blocks from the spawn; the scene at the bunker gate shows you where. The land around it is kept free of water and ore fields. Opening it is the final goal of the game. See Great Portal.

Day and night

Block Factory uses Hytale's day and night cycle. The minimap shows the time. At night, powered Lamps light up; Solar Panels produce power only in daylight. See Power.

The map

The world map colors ore fields and labels them in explored areas, and shows markers for the bunker, both portals, ruins, nests and more. Map layers add overlays for noise, power lines, nests, ruins and Goblin Hut range. See Field Manual and HUD.
