BetterBiomes:Caves

Better Biomes reworks the underground. The cave overhaul adds huge halls, long tunnels, lakes and ore bands to all land zones, and every zone gets themed caves of its own. Some caves have inhabitants. All caves only appear in newly generated chunks.

To jump into the nearest cave of a type, use /ub cave <ID> from Utility Biome, for example /ub cave BetterBiomes_Frostglass.

Cave overhaul

Great Hollow

Huge open halls up to about 50 blocks across, made of a core chamber and overlapping side chambers, held up by natural stone pillars. They appear in the deeper tiers of every land zone.

Wormways

Long, winding tunnels that branch out through the rock between other caves.

Crawlways

Very thin, twisty passages.

Underground Lake

A flat hall flooded with water up to just below its middle, at about y 60.

Lava Lake

The same kind of flat hall, but filled with lava, deep down in the hot zones (Zone 2 Tier 2–3 and Zone 4).

Iron and Copper Lodes

Long bands of ore mixed with other rock:

Lode Zone 1 Zone 3
Iron Lode iron ore with basalt iron ore with slate
Copper Lode copper ore with marble copper ore with basalt

Giant Maw

A wide vertical shaft (radius 6–9 blocks) that drops about 40 blocks from the surface into a large hall, with passages leading off. From above it looks like a dark hole in the ground. Giant Maws are rare and appear in all land zones.

Themed caves

Sinter Halls

Calcite floors, dense calcite stalactites, sinter columns and small pools. Zone 1 and Zone 2.

Moss Gardens

Moss on floor and ceiling, lianas, clay pools, glowing mushrooms and pinkberries. Two cave plants of the mod grow only here: glimmerberry vines, which glow and carry edible glimmerberries, and umbrella leaves. Zone 1.

Umbral Depths

A huge, dark hall just above the lava, with slate and basalt floors, ruins and basalt pillars. Blue crystals are the only light. The mod's gloomvines (glowing) and ghostcaps (with a pale glow) grow here. Dangerous: Void Crawlers, Void Spectres and Void Eyes spawn in the dark. Zone 1 and Zone 3, Tier 2–3.

Glowshroom Grotto

Tall halls with a mycelium floor, glowing mushrooms in blue, violet and green, and tree-sized giant mushrooms with glowing mushrooms hanging from their caps. Zone 1, Tier 2–3.

Zone 1

Overgrown Cave

Overgrown Cave

An underground meadow: deep grass, lush grass, ferns, moss and glowing mushrooms in blue, green and purple.

Rich Cave

Patches of ore all over the floor and ceiling. Rarer ores appear in the higher tiers:

Tier Ores (share)
1 copper 65%, iron 35%
2 copper 45%, iron 40%, gold 15%
3 copper 35%, iron 35%, gold 20%, silver 10%

Spiked Cave

A vertical shaft, visible from the surface, drops into a dripstone hall with side tunnels. Large stalagmites rise from the floor and hang from the ceiling, with small ones in between.

Spider Nest

Chambers full of spider webs and bones. Spiders and Cave Spiders spawn here, more than in vanilla spider caves.

Mountain Cave

Entrance of a Mountain Cave

Starts on the surface of a mountain: a hall 8–12 blocks below, with four horizontal arms. The arms that point downhill break out of the slope, so the cave has entrances on the hillside. Zone 1 and Zone 3.

Zone 2

Marble Cave

A bright marble hall in the sandstone of Zone 2, with marble gravel and yellow and white crystals that give a warm light.

Scarab Cave

A sprawling insect nest of brood chambers and narrow tunnels with hive soil walls, egg sacks, spit and bones. Orange glowing mushrooms are the only light, and the creatures of the desert caves spawn in the dark. Tier 2–3.

Zone 3

Frostglass Cave

Frostglass Cave

An ice chamber with glowing blue, cyan and white crystals and crystal fields in the ice floor.

Meltwater Cave

Half-flooded chambers with a gravel floor, blue glowing mushrooms, blue moss and dripping icicles.

Crevasse

A glacier crevasse that tears open from the surface: narrow, tall, with ice and snow at the bottom. Tier 2–3.

Frostwolf Lair

An icy den with bones and icicles. Packs of White Wolves live here; about 15% of the spawns are a Polar Bear instead.

Bone Crypt

A cave that only forms below the Giants' Graveyard. You enter through a fossil chamber and find ossuary passages and halls of bone behind it.

Zone 4

Magma Cave

Magma Cave

A chamber with a lava lake, a volcanic floor with glowing cracks and a crust of cooled magma, red crystals and fire. Most of the floor stays dark, so the volcanic creatures of Zone 4 can spawn. Tier 4–5.

Ash Pits

A pit that opens at the surface and leads down into an ash chamber with faintly glowing spots, dead bushes and red crystals. Only in the ash biomes of Tier 5.

Sea Caves

Flooded caves that open up in the sea floor of the oceans.
