BetterBiomes:Configuration

Better Biomes has a settings file, BetterBiomes.json, in the mod's data folder. The server creates it with the default values on the first start. Changes take effect after a restart and only affect newly generated chunks.

Default file

{
  "Features": true,
  "Structures": true,
  "FeatureChance": 1.0,
  "DisabledFeatures": [],
  "DisabledBiomes": []
}

Settings

Setting Default What it does
Features true false switches off all world features: waterfalls, overhangs, floating islands, structures, fruit on trees, crystal spires and everything else listed under Feature IDs.
Structures true false switches off only the small structures (camps, ruins, graves, temples, huts …), see Structures.
FeatureChance 1.0 Multiplies how often every feature appears: 0.5 = half as often, 2 = twice as often (at most once per chunk). 0 switches all features off.
DisabledFeatures [] Switches off single features by ID, for example ["betterbiomes:waterfall", "betterbiomes:overhang"].
DisabledBiomes [] Switches off single Better Biomes biomes. The vanilla biome below takes their place. (Added after 1.4.0.)

What the settings don't change: the biomes themselves (use DisabledBiomes for that), their plants and trees, the caves, the castle ruins and caravanserais (they belong to their biomes) and the giant skeletons in Zone 3.

Notes:

  • FeatureChance also scales features that normally run in every chunk of their biome, such as the Buried City or the pools of the Sinter Terraces. Values below 1 leave gaps there.
  • The Buried City is a feature, not a structure, so "Structures": false does not remove it.
  • One feature always stays on: betterbiomes:floating_tree_cleanup removes trees that would float in the air above sinkholes and shafts.
  • The server log lists all active feature IDs at startup, and the ones switched off by the settings.

Disabling biomes

DisabledBiomes takes biome names in several forms. Upper and lower case don't matter.

Entry Effect
"Cherry_Grove" Cherry Grove off in every zone and tier
"BetterBiomes_Cherry_Grove" the same, with the prefix
"Zone2_Tier2/Custom.BetterBiomes_Dune_Sea" Dune Sea off only in Zone 2, Tier 2

Example:

"DisabledBiomes": ["Cherry_Grove", "Zone2_Tier2/Custom.BetterBiomes_Dune_Sea"]

All biome IDs are on Zones Overview; the zone and tier folder names are Zone1_Tier1 … Zone4_Tier5, Zone2_Shore and Oceans. Entries that match no biome are reported as a warning in the server log. The setting needs a restart.
